BENDER BREAKTHROUGH FOR KVAERNER MASA MARINE
Bender Shipbuilding and Repair Co., Inc. of Mobile, Alabama has been awarded a construction contract by Naviera Tamaulipas, S.A. of Tampico, Mexico for a 202 ft Platform Supply Vessel designed by Kvaerner Masa Marine (KMM), part of the Aker Kvaerner Group.
The 202 ft x 54 ft x 19 ft vessel was designed by Kvaerner Masa Marine (KMM) in consultation with Bender and Naviera Tamaulipas and incorporates the specific needs of the owner for operation in the Mexican offshore market and includes some of the latest industry technology and trends such as oblong liquid mud tanks outboard of the center line bulk mud tanks, 600 H.P. A/C electric motor driven C.P.P. tunnel thrusters, two in the bow and one in the stern. The vessel will be certified to ABS DPS1 and will be equipped with a 5300 G.P.M. fire monitor driven by an A/C electric motor. Propulsion consists of two Caterpillar 3516B DITA diesel engines driving fixed pitch open propellers.
The vessel design is based on the KMM standard K200 series K220 that KMM developed specifically for the Gulf of Mexico market. The K200 series consists of Platform Supply Vessels designs (PSVs) where the second two digits represent the design deadweight in hundreds of tons. The design has been tailored to the facilities and construction philosophy at the Bender shipyard
Commenting on the vessel, Tom Bender, President of Bender, stated that, "We welcome this opportunity to team with KMM and with Capt. Sanchez and his team at Naviera Tamaulipas to construct a vessel which will be the best equipped and mission capable PSV in the Mexican Flag Fleet."
Captain Sanchez, President of Naviera Tamaulipas, remarked that "I am fully confident that the vessel, as designed by KMM and specified by Naviera Tamaulipas and which is to be built by Bender, contains state of the art operating characteristics and mission capability that will allow it work in the very competitive Mexican offshore market, as well as any offshore oil field in the world."
John Avis, President of Kvaerner Masa Marine, commented that, "We are pleased that Bender and Naviera Tamaulipas have chosen KMM and our new K-series as the basis for this vessel. This helps KMM with its goal to become the leading supplier of OSV designs to shipyards and Owners in the GOM offshore supply and service industry within the next few years."
