MASA-YARDS ADOPTS 3-D CAD 2D CAD design and 2D drawings will become a thing of the past at Finland's Kvaerner Masa-Yards. Thats because last month, Spains SENER Ingenieria y Sistemas S.A began supplying a new 3DCAD system to Kvaerner Masa-Yards shipyards in Turku and Helsinki, Finland that will allow the entire ship design process to be based on 3D computer design tools and product models. Under the contract, SENERs FORAN V50 software will be customized and installed on 140 workstations at the yards. Kvaerners investment in hardware and software amounts to FIM 20 million.
Up until now, the basic design stage at the Finnish yards was based on 2D CAD design and 2D drawings. Three-dimensional ship design was only used locally in the design of specific systems.
Using the 3D product model, however, the shipyards various design departments will be able to simultaneously, in real time, design the ships different systems. With 3D visualization, efficiency is also improved on design solutions and space utilization. Additionally, possible design conflicts are resolved sooner with the new design method, which results in savings in design, labor and material costs. It is estimated that the yards could save tens of millions Finnish markka annually. The introduction of FORAN will also leverage the shipyards electronic information exchange systems. For example, suppliers will have on-line network access to 3D basic design information in different file formats. |
