October 10, 2008 Plan to reopen Mare Island graving docksA company called California Dry Dock Solutions is looking to lease graving docks two and three at the former Mare Island Naval Shipyard site in Vallejo, California. The Mare Island base, 25 miles northeast of San Francisco, closed in 1996 and approximately 650 acres is being developed through a public/private partnership between the City of Vallejo and Lennar Mare Island, LLC, a joint venture of MW Housing Partners, LNR Property Corporation and Lennar Corporation. According to a report in the Vallejo Times Herald, California Dry Dock Solutions, submitted a unit plan application to Vallejo city staff on Tuesday, with Lennar Mare Island's blessing. The report says that Lennar Mare Island officials, "optimistic, based on (the applicant's) history, that the applicant is committed to going through the process." The company is also, according to the report "seeking a regional dredging permit as Allied Defense Recycling" and "plans to repair, dismantle and build ships in the island's mammoth graving docks."
