Obama eyes Arizona Governor for DHS top spot
According to reports surfacing in the blogosphere, Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano is either President-Elect Barack Obama's pick for Secretary of Homeland Security, or at least high on his list.
The Department of Homeland Security is, of course, of vital maritime interest--not least because it includes the U.S. Coast Guard.
Prior to her election as Governor, Napolitano served as U.S. Attorney for Arizona and as Arizona's first female Attorney General.
A Napolitano appointment could be good news for Customs and Border Protection. Her website says that she "leads the nation in addressing illegal immigration, and was the first governor to call for the National Guard at the border at federal expense. She continues to be a national voice in calling upon the federal government to accept their responsibility for our nation's borders."
That could just indicate that her name is being leaked to see whether it provokes howls of protest from those who are unhappy at any notion of tighter immigration enforcement.
