Former Lott legislative director joins K&L Gates
James A. Sartucci has joined the Washington office of law firm Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis LLP (K&L Gates) as a government affairs counselor in the firm's public policy and law practice.
Sartucci joins K&L Gates from the United States Senate, where he served several years on the staff of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation and was responsible for maritime, aviation, surface transportation and homeland security issues, before becoming legislative director for Sen. Trent Lott. He will focus on Coast Guard, maritime and other transportation issues with the firm.
As Lott's principal legislative advisor since 1999, including the senator's tenures as Majority and Minority Leader of the U.S. Senate, Sartucci's experience spans a wide range of policy areas in addition to his recognized expertise on maritime matters. Among the important pieces of legislation Sartucci helped to enact during this time were the SAFE Port Act of 2006, Post-Katrina Emergency Management Reform Act of 2006, Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Security Acts of 2004 and 2006, and the National Homeland Security and Combating Terrorism Act of 2002.
Previously, Sartucci also served as a staff member and Coast Guard Fellow with the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. Additionally, he was a commissioned officer in the United States Coast Guard for more than 17 years.
Manny Rouvelas, a partner in K&L Gates' Washington, D.C., public policy and law practice, said: "K&L Gates is delighted to welcome Jim as a counselor in our Washington office. His exceptional and wide-ranging legislative experience and deep knowledge of maritime policy further strengthen our firm's expanding public policy practice."
"As one of its many substantive dimensions, K&L Gates' leading policy practice includes a focus on the maritime area, where our practitioners have operated with distinction for many years," said K&L Gates Chairman and Global Managing Partner Peter J. Kalis. "Jim is an important addition to our firmwide policy practice in general and to our maritime practice in particular."
