Upgrades planned for VT Halter, Signal
The Mississippi Press reports that the Jackson County Board of Supervisors and Jackson County Port Authority are to move forward on shipyard improvements at Signal International and VT Halter Marine.
The county is to apply for funds from a post-Katrina grant program managed by the Mississippi Development Authority. If funds are awarded, the Port Authority will act a project manager for the shipyard upgrades.
Signal International's project would include dredging to create a "deep hole" for drydocking larger vessels, deepening the docking area from about 38 feet to about 60 to 70 feet.
VT Halter Marine would build a structure where entire vessels could be built under cover, the newspaper quotes CEO Butch King as saying.
The pipe and marine fabrication building would "help execute a pending contract with a U.S. government agency to build three vessels that would be made from metals best welded out of the wind and under cover," says the newspaper.
It says King would not elaborate on the details of the job, since contracts are not yet signed.
