October 30, 2007 Superferry legislation steams aheadSpecial state legislation to enable Hawaii Superferry to resume operations is speeding through the Hawaii legislature. It will enable the ferry to operate while the state conducts an environmental impact assessment The bill will negate a state Supreme Court ruling in August that an environmental review was necessary and a Maui court ruling this month that Superferry could not use Kahului Harbor until the review was completed. Yesterday, the state Senate voted 20-5 in favor of the bill, though several senators voted yes with reservations. The Senate sent the bill to the House after attaching operating conditions intended to protect whales and prevent the transfer of invasive species. Two House committees have now agreed those changes abd passed the bill to the full House, which is scheduled to consider it tomorrow. |
