Signal International hires shipyard workers in India
According to a report in the Beaumont Enterprise, Signal International is hiring temporary workers from India to for its Orange, Texas, and Pascagoula, Miss., shipyards.
The newspaper reports that 300 workers will come to the Orange yard and 290 to Pascagoula.
The newspaper says they will work in welding and ship fitting jobs and work on new construction projects and on repairing rigs and equipment damaged by last year's hurricanes.
When the 10-month term of their H-2B work visas ends, the workers will be eligible to apply for an extension.
"Despite intensive and comprehensive recruitment efforts we just were not able to find sufficient numbers of qualified workers," the newspaper quotes a Signal official as saying.
The workers will live in modular housing and a New Orleans catering company will provide Indian food to both the Orange workers and those in Pascagoula, says the report.
