Aker Philadelphia floats out fourth containership

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard has reached another milestone with the launch of the final containership in a four-ship series for Matson Navigation Company.

The 681 foot long CV 2500 containership will be named the Maunalei and on delivery will join three similar vessels in Matsons fleet also constructed at the yard and delivered between 2003 and 2005.

The ship was floated out from the yard's Drydock No. 4, utilizing the dock's intermediate gate to allow construction to proceed with the yard's first product tanker in the same dock.

Maunalei was moved to Drydock No. 5, where testing and commissioning will take place in the coming months.

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc., formerly known as Kvaerner Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc., is the shipbuilding subsidiary of newly-established Aker American Shipping. In conjunction with affiliated subsidiaries, the state-of-the-art shipyard located on the site of the former Philadelphia Navy Yard is embarking on a project to build, own, and lease product tankers for the U.S. Jones Act market.
