Intrepid set for new tow attempt

The aircraft carrier Intrepid is scheduled to be moved on Tuesday, December 5 from its berth at Pier 86 in Manhattan to Bayonne, NJ. Significant surveying, diving and dredging operations provided by the U.S. Navy, its salvage contractor, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are complete.

Since November 6, the salvage operation has been undertaken as a coordinated effort between the U.S. Navy, the Army Corps of Engineers, the N.Y.C. Economic Development Corporation, the New York City Department of Sanitation, the N.Y.S. Department of Environmental Conservation, N.O.A.A. (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), the National Marine Fisheries Service, the U.S. Coast Guard and many other agencies.

"We are grateful for the support we have received from so many different agencies who have worked so hard over the last few weeks, as well as from people all around the world who have been concerned about the future of the ship and her critically important national mission," said Arnold Fisher, chairman of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.

"Based on getting the green light from the U.S. Navy, their salvage contractor DonJon Marine, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and our tow company McAllister Towing, we look forward to the ship moving on December 5th," said Bill White, president of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.

During the salvage operation, approximately 39,000 cubic yards of material was dredged from around and underneath the stern area, rudder and propellers. This material has been and will continue to be environmentally processed to rigorous standards set forth by the N.Y.S. Department of Environmental Conservation.

The vessel will be towed on a high tide on December 5, between 7:30 and 9:30 AM, depending on conditions that morning. The Intrepid will unfurl its gigantic American flag between 10:00 and 10:30 AM as it passes Ground Zero shore point as a tribute to those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. It should pass the Statue of Liberty between 11:00 and 11:30 AM and arrive in Bayonne between 2:30 and 3:00 PM.

McAllister Towing will again provide towing services for the move, at no additional cost to the Intrepid.

The progress of the move and then live ongoing renovations of Pier 86 can now be viewed daily on the Intrepid's website through Earthcam:
