August 30, 2006 Bharati Shipyard to build jack up India's Great Eastern Shipping Co. Ltd. has contracted to acquire a newbuilding self propelled (cantilever type) independent leg, jack up drilling unit from Bharati Shipyard Limited. The 350 ft rig is expected to be delivered during the fourth quarter of 2008. On the demerger of Great Eastern's Offshore Division the unit will be transferred to Great Offshore Limited, the resulting company. Bharati Shipyard notes that there are only nine manufacturers of this type of jack up rig world wide. It says its entry into this niche market segment will give a major boost to its offshore manufacturing activities.
