No U.S. Navy agreement on pirates

The U.S. Department of State has denied reports that the U.S. Navy has agreed to help the transitional government of Somalia deal with pirates. Those reports said that the Navy would also help the transitional government set up a Coast Guard.

In response to a question at its April 18 daily press briefing on the nature of the reported agreement the State Department responded:

The State Department has not negotiated any such contracts or agreements. As part of an on-going dialogue to support the re-establishment of governance in Somalia, we have held diplomatic discussions with representatives from the Transitional Federal Government concerning a number of areas of possible cooperation, including anti-piracy efforts."
