Singapore licenses ferry operators

In a further effort to enhance port security, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has introduced a licensing scheme for regional ferry operators.

Regional ferry operators already had adopted a set of safety and security measures. The new licensing regime formalizes the need for compliance with these measures. The MPA says this is important because of the popularity of ferry services as a mode of transport for traveling between nearby destinations in the region.

With effect from January 1,2005, companies that operate regional ferry services are required to obtain a license in order to provide such services in Singapore. Currently, there are six such regional ferry operators in Singapore and all six companies have obtained the licences.
