Jobs go at Helsinki shipyard
As earlier reported, Aker Yards is focusing operations at its Helsinki shipyard on the assembly and outfitting of ferries. It has now completed negotiations with employee representatives and says that as a result 85 blue collar and 80 white collar jobs at the yard will be eliminated.
Aker Yards anticipates that about half the people affected will be re-employed elsewhere in Aker Yards or within the Finnish marine cluster while some others will be covered by be retirement arrangements. The aim is to have all the steps taken before the end of the year.
Aker Yards' three Finnish yards in Helsinki, Rauma and Turku, employing some 4,000 people, have been operating as one company and one organization since the beginning of this year, with both work and people flexibly shared between the three sites. Investments have been made in a new block factory in Turku, where recruitment of skilled platers and welders is going on.
