American Commercial Lines launches JeffLabs

Jeffersonville, Ind., based American Commercial Lines Inc. has formed JeffLabs, a new business unit focusing on technology applications for the transportation industry.

JeffLabs will build upon the strength of ACL's two major holdings, American Commercial Barge Line LLC and Jeffboat LLC.

The new unit will focus initially on five areas of opportunity: Safety, Logistics, Regulatory Reporting, Customer Service and Operational Efficiency.

Jerry Linzey, Sr. Vice President Manufacturing, said "As an example, applying Telematics for improved logistical tracking will be a key enabler for better productivity and lower operating costs. The transportation industry is eager for the application of new technologies. This industry has always been willing to do whatever is necessary to provide the best service at the lowest cost."

Commenting on the new business unit, Mark R. Holden, President and CEO, stated, "We are convinced that we can positively affect the productivity, the velocity and the operating cost of barge transportation in the United States through innovation. As we improve barge transportation performance, we broaden the market for freight moving by barge. The transportation industry can look forward to numerous projects that the JeffLabs group has already identified to be available in 2006 and thereafter."

JeffLabs will be led by Richard J. Schoenian, Vice President Engineering. Projects will be completed by a dedicated engineering staff and through partnerships with external suppliers and universities.
