August 10, 2005 Port states plan ISPS anniversary checks Last month marked the one year anniversary of the implementation of the new international maritime security regulations embodied in the ISPS Code. The Republic of the Marshall Islands issued a Marine Safety Advisory on August 5 saying that, following the one year anniversary, "there will likely be port state control agencies that wish to conduct a Security Compliance Examination to verify that the vessel and its crew remain in compliance with the ISPS Code since the initial verification audit. PSC's intent would likely be to verify that the ship continues to be in a state of 'maritime security readiness' and that the Administration and Recognized Security Organization (RSO) have performed appropriate verifications and audits of the vessel's security program since implementation of the ISPS Code in July 2004. These Security Compliance Examinations may be in addition to a Safety and Environmental Protection Compliance boarding." |
