DHS awards $5 million in ferry security grants
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security today announced $141,630,806 in transit security grants, including $5 million for ferry systems. In contrast, $108 million was allocated for rail transit systems and $22.4 million for intra-city bus systems.
A footnote to the department's listing of award recipients says "funding for the ferry portion of the award is derived from the funds provided for port security."
Ferry operations getting the grants are listed as:
San Francisco: Golden Gate Bridge,Highway and Transportation District
New Orleans: Louisiana Department of Transportation--Crescent City Connection
Boston: Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority
New York/Jersey City: New York City Department of Transportation and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey
Houston: Texas DOT (Bolivar Roads Ferry)
Seattle: Washington State Ferries
No breakdown is provided as to how much each ferry system was awarded or for what the funds will be used.
