In the March 2010 issue of Marine Log we interview Rear Admiral James Watson, Director of Operations, U.S. Coast Guard, Atlantic Area.
The Atlantic Area includes five of the Coast Guard Districts, encompassing 42 states. The Atlantic Area has responsibility for 4 million square miles of navigable water, stretching from the Rockies to the Arabian Gulf and from Canada to the Caribbean. The Atlantic Area is in charge of the Coast Guard's mobile assets, which include its large High Endurance Cutters and fixed winged aircraft.
We talked with Admiral Watson regarding the aging Coast Guard fleet and the pace of its replacement and on the challenges of completing the agency's missions of safeguarding life, property and the environment, along with homeland defense, in the wake of a tightening budget.
