Keystone Shipping Services, Inc. of Bala Cynwyd, PA, as Ship Managers for the Maritime Administration (MARAD), awarded Bender Shipbuilding & Repair Co., Inc. a contract for drydocking, mechanical and piping repairs and major preservation efforts on CAPE VICTORY and CAPE VINCENT.
The ships are sister 632 ft roll-on / roll-off vessels assigned to MARAD's Ready Reserve Fleet and they are currently berthed in Beaumont, TX. CAPE VICTORY is due to arrive at Bender's facilities in Mobile in early June followed by CAPE VINCENT in mid-July.
The 70-day contract is valued at approximately $2.5 million. It will keep 65 shipyard personnel busy through the early summer months.
CAPE VICTORY and CAPE VINCENT were modified extensively by Bender in the late 1990's with the addition of spar decks to accommodate additional military cargo required to support troops overseas.
