Piracy warning for South China Sea
The International Maritime Bureau has issued a piracy warning to all ships transiting off Mangkai Island / Anambas Islands / South China Sea.
IMB says "three vessels have been attacked by armed pirates in the last few days in position lat. 02:58N Ð 105:14E, 02:58N Ð 105:11E and 02:47N Ð 105:07E. It appears that a group of about five to eight armed pirates are targeting vessels during the hours of darkness in the area. The authorities have been notified."
One of the incidents occurred Saturday off Pulau Mangkai when six pirates armed with knives, crowbars and batons boarded an LPG tanker underway.
The ship has been identified in published reports as the 10,537 cu.m Eitzen Gas vessel Sigloo Discovery.
The IMB says: "Master, 2/O and duty A/B negotiated with the pirates not to harm anyone and gave everything as demanded by them. The pirates tied them up, stole their personal belongings and cash and escaped in a canoe craft. Alarm raised, SSAS activated and crew mustered. No injuries to crew."
