TOTE earns OHSAS 1801 certification

DNV has granted Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc., (TOTE) Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) 18001:2007 certification for safety standards.

An OHSAS 18001 certificate proves that a management system has been measured against a best practice standard and found compliant. Issued by a third party accreditation body/registrar, the certificate lets employees and other stakeholders know that a company proactively protects the health and safety of its work force. TOTE was certified to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001:2004 standard for environmental practices in 2007. The OHSAS 18001 implementation was done in coordination with 14001 as a health, safety and environmental (HSE) program. TOTE has retained an ISO certification for quality management systems (9000 series) since 1998.

"We believe that every TOTE employee and contractor is responsible for his or her own safety and for the safety of others," said TOTE Safety and Risk Manager Rob Lowe. "Our targets are zero injuries, zero workplace illness and zero trucking incidents."

To achieve those targets, TOTE implemented numerous practices, including a safety orientation for all employees and new employees. Safety committees at each location meet monthly to identify hazards and recommend controls. Each scheduled business meeting begins with a "Safety Minute" to review emergency procedures and to discuss a topic of the week. A brochure on safety and environmental guidelines is provided to each contractor who performs work on a TOTE facility or vessel.

"Our OHSAS 18001:2007 certification demonstrates to our customers, vendors, and the public the importance TOTE gives to having competent management systems in place in all facets of our business activity and how those systems function together to create a successful working environment," said TOTE President and Chief Operating Officer Bill Deaver.

"This new quality benchmark is a great milestone for our company," he said. "It is a testament to TOTE's desire to manage an environmentally responsible organization that is mindful of the health and safety of others."

OHSAS 18001:2007 is an internationally-recognized, independently-verified management standard designed to be compatible with the ISO 9001 (quality) and ISO 14001 (environmental) systems in order to facilitate the integration of quality, environmental and occupational health and safety management systems by organizations.
