STX Europe books ship upgrade contracts
STX Europe has signed three ship upgrade contracts. In one, Carnival Cruise Lines' Sensation will get 98 additional passenger cabin balconies and new black and gray water piping. The work will be performed at Grand Bahama Shipyard in January and February 2009. The other two contracts cover refurbishing of the crew accommodations in two Neste tankers, MT Palva and Stena Poseidon.
The work onboard the oil tankers will be done while the vessels are in operation.
STX Europe's Lifecycle Services division has been providing ship upgrades, modifications and conversions for several years. Its market is expected to grow as the industry and ships have to adapt to new regulatory demands/
"There is tremendous growth in the future demand of lifecycle services, as the newbuildings of earlier decades will need upgrades. Environmental awareness is also an important driver, as well as cutting operational costs", says Vesa Marttinen, VP Lifecycle Services.
In addition to the three latest contracts, the STX Europe orderbook includes four other modernizations: its Rauma shipyard is converting a ferry to an expedition cruise vessel for Canada's G.A.P Adventures and an offshore barge for Norway's Aker Stord. The Helsinki yard is converting two ro-ro-vessels for Finnlines.
