Piracy suspects to face Rotterdam court

Five Somalis will appear before an examining judge in Rotterdam tomorrow accused of an attempt to hijack the Samanyolu, a ship registered in the Netherlands Antilles, a self-governing region of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The pirates face possible maximum terms of imprisonment from nine to 12 years. They were flown to the Netherlands from Bahrain, reports Radio Netherlands Worldwide.

Their boat caught fire and sank on January 2 in the Gulf of Aden after the crew of the Samanyolu fired flares at it. The would-be hijackers were fished out of the water by the Danish warship Absalon.

Danish newspaper Politiken says the five were handed over to the Dutch authorities early this morning. The five were officially arrested and charged in a handover operation on board the Absalon in Bahrain.
