Bay Shipbuilding plans 405 layoffs

Bay Shipbuilding, now part of the Fincantieri Marine Group, has written the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development informing it that recent business conditions have forced the company to lay off more workers. In all, say local media reports, 405 employees will be affected.

The layoffs are expected to begin by October 30.

Fox 11 TV says that the shipbuilder is the largest employer in Door County, with about 700 employees prior to the latest layoffs.

In its letter to the state, Bay Shipbuilding says "The company is continuing to try to mitigate these layoffs by aggressively seeking new business. Should the business conditions improve, it might be unnecessary to layoff to the extent contained in this... Notification."
