Kings Point names Fell Commandant of Midshipmen
William G. Fell, Jr., a 1978 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, has been named the 16th Commandant of Midshipmen at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y.. He holds the rank of captain, U.S. Maritime Service.
The post of Commandant of Midshipmen is comparable to Dean of Students at a civilian college.
Fell was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps following graduation from the Naval Academy. He then completed Basic School and Combat Engineer Officers School, where he was the first recipient of the Cornwall Leadership Award. He subsequently served in posts in Okinawa, Hawaii and Northern Norway.
In 1988 he reported to Battle Creek, MI and was promoted to Major with the 4th Bridge Company, which was the first Marine Reserve unit sent to Operation Desert Shield. Fell later reported to 1st Marine Aircraft Wing and served as Operations Officer and Executive Officer. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and reported to Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow where he served a Facilities and Services Officer and later as Deputy Commander.
Retiring form the Marine Corps in 1998, Fell taught high school science, health and physical education at Grove City High School in Columbus, OH. In 2004 he joined the staff of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy as Assistant Athletic Director for Physical Fitness and Club Sports. He later assumed duties as Deputy Commandant of Midshipmen and later as Acting Commandant before selection to his current post.
A native of Rootstown, Ohio, Fell holds a Bachelor's degree in Management and Engineering from the Naval Academy, and a Master's degree in Educational Leadership from Troy State University. He also acquired a certificate in Sports Management from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Sports Management Institute.
Fell, who resides on the USMMA campus, is married to the former Deborah Haynes. They have three children.
