ABS moves Europe and Middle East survey headquarters to Piraeus
Classification society ABS is moving its survey department headquarters for Europe and the Middle East from London to Piraeus. "From an operational standpoint, Greece is more centrally located within the Europe and Middle East Division," said ABS President and Chief Operating Officer Christopher J. Wiernicki, explaining the decision.
ABS veteran Dimitri Houliarakis has been appointed Divisional Vice President and Assistant Chief Surveyor responsible for all ABS survey activities from Dublin to Karachi and Capetown to Murmansk, He has has served for many years as Regional Vice President for Eastern Europe. He joins Dimitri Kostaras, Divisional Vice President of Engineering and Captain Steve Blair, Divisional head of Health, Safety, Quality and the Environment in Piraeus.
Houliarakis replaces Manuel Castro, who is moving from London to Shanghai to take on the responsibilities of Assistant Chief Surveyor, Pacific Northern Region for the class society.
"This region encompasses the three principal shipbuilding nations in the world--Korea, China and Japan," Wiernicki noted. "And China is now established as one of the leading ship repair centers in the world so there is a wide and challenging range of survey issues that must be addressed on a continual basis. Manuel Castro brings tremendous experience to the challenge."
Castro replaces Kurt Larsen in Shanghai. Larsen will relocate to Houston where he will join the Corporate Survey and Classification team as Assistant Chief Surveyor, providing direct support to ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Surveyor Lenny Pendexter.
Moving from Houston to Piraeus is Demetri Stroubakis, who succeeds Houliarakis as Vice President for the Eastern Region of Europe. The ABS European Eastern Region comprises Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Malta, the Black Sea countries and the Balkan region including Croatia.
Stroubakis has been serving as Executive Assistant to ABS President and COO Christopher J. Wiernicki. He had previously served as ABS Country Manager, Romania.
A graduate of the US Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point) and of Texas A&M's MBA program, Stroubakis has been with ABS for seventeen years, holding a series of increasingly senior surveyor positions.
