VT Halter low bidder on Steamship Authority ferry
VT Halter Marine was reportedly the lowest qualified bidder when the Woods Hole, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority opened bids to build a replacement for its aging Islander ferry.
The replacement will be a 250-foot double-ended ferry with the capacity to carry 1,200 passengers and 76 cars at about 16 knots.
VT Halter Marine's bid reportedly came in at $31.4 million. Two other yards bid lower, but did not meet bonding requirements.
The VT Halter Marine bid is some 25 percent above Steamship Authority management estimates. However, steel prices have risen substantially since those estimates were made and it is thought likely that a decision to award the contract to VT Halter Marine will be made at a Steamship Authority governors' meeting slated for November 23.
