Kleven to design Odfjell tankers
Odfjell ASA has turned to Kleven Design AS, the design company in Norway's Kleven Maritime group, to develop the design of a series of products/chemical tankers it is building in Russia.
Odfjell announced last month that it had reached agreement with Russia's Sevmash yard to build a series of eight to twelve advanced product/chemical carriers, for delivery 2007 onwards. These will be IMO type II fully coated vessels of about 45,000 dwt. and will replace some of Odfjell's older chemical carriers.
Sevmash is located in Severodvinsk near Arkangelsk. While it does have a commercial shipbuilding portfolio, it is best known for building nuclear submarines.
The first eight of Odfjell's Sevmash vessels will cost on average about $41 million each. The optional four vessels will be priced according to a mutually agreed market-related formula.
The contract with Kleven design is for eight ships with options for an additional four. This is Kleven Design's second design contract for a non-Kleven shipyard, and it is the first design contract between a Russian shipyard and a Norwegian technology provider for chemical carriers."
"We have a clear intentions of establishing Kleven Design as an international provider of ship design and ship technology consulting services for the most advanced tankers," says Arnhild Dyrhaug, Kleven Design's Managing Director."This contract is a major step toward our goal. We have delivered 13 highly specialized stainless steel tankers for Odfjell from our yard in Floro, and are proud and glad we are selected as the ship designer for their new series of ships contracted in Russia"
"For this series of ships," he continued, "we will develop the ship concept and make all basic design drawings including some of the required 3D-models of the ship. The ships are 45,000 dwt, and have a length of 182.70 m and breadth of 32.20 m."
