Rapid repairs to newbuild tanker diesel
Diesel repair specialist Goltens says that a three-year crankshaft R&D project has significantly cut repair times for two stroke engines, resulting in substantial time and cost savings for owners and operators.
Goltens recently flew two teams of engineers from Rotterdam and Singapore and 1,300 kg of special tools to Korea, undertaking major engine repair work (a damaged crankpin) on a 150,000 dwt tanker newbuild not yet delivered to owners.
Goltens shaved 5 mm off the original 760 mm diameter crankpin and machined new crankpin fillets to avoid misalignment. The yard made a dummy bearing for the blue fitting of the pin.
"No manual filing or polishing was needed to achieve the blue contact of 90 per cent - an accomplishment deemed highly unlikely just a few months ago. The end result was a new crankpin diameter of 755 mm at a tolerance ratio within 2/100 of a millimeter," said Roel Van Etten, Managing Director, Goltens, Rotterdam.
Machining was performed with a frequency controlled electrical drive and single point cutting unit. Crankcase cleaning was accomplished in a very short time and upon completion the vessel left the yard--only seven days after Goltens arrived.
"Significant repair work of this volume within such a short period has never been accomplished before. We manned two shifts every day. Both the shipyard, owner and the engine maker superintendent were very satisfied with the quick turnaround and the quality of work," said Van Etten.
He said, "Repair work of this nature could not have been accomplished without Goltens experience and the technological advancement of its new range of two-stroke crankshaft repair tools.
Goltens says there is increasing market demand for repair solutions to handle new crankshaft designs according to OEM tolerance requirements. All the critical elements necessary to ensure rapid, successful, insitu repairs, including site preparation, services, testing, and installation, are now in place, says Goltens.
Goltens confirms that a newly trained team of engineers has performed two similar repair projects, both achieving highly satisfactory results.
Goltens says its new crankshaft repair tools represent great strides in the rapid repair of state of the art crankshafts, thus improving bottom line losses associated with down time.
