May 7 2002 Germany gets approval for seafarer training subsidy The European Commission gave the go-ahead today to a German aid scheme aimed at reducing the cost of training seafarers. The European Commission today authorized Germany to help shipping companies finance the training of seafarers. The aid regime will help preserve maritime know-how and expertise on board of German merchant ships. The financial contribution will be allocated providing seafarers are trained on board ships entered in the German register of sea-going vessels.
