EU single hull ban takes effect

The EU ban on transportation of heavy petroleum products in tankers with single hulls is now in effect. following publication of the regulation in the EU Official Journal.

From today, no tanker with a single hull will be authorized to transport heavy hydrocarbons from or to any EU port. In addition, the calendar for the phase out of all single hull tankers has been accelerated. Single hull tankers more than 23 years old are immediately banned from EU ports, while those more than 15 year old tankers and more will be subjected to extensive technical inspections.

According to a European Commission statement, the efforts of the EU are now turned towards the international situation so that similar measurements are put in place by all countries.
