According to a report by Louisa Handle in Rhode Island's Providence Journal, Blount-Barker Shipbuilding LLC of Warren, R.I. has filed for receivership in Superior Court.

Under an agreement approved yesterday in Superior Court, the report quotes Luther Blount as saying, receiver Allen Shine, of the Providence-based law firm of Winograd, Shine and Zacks, has agreed to pay rent to Blount's companies for continued operation of the shipyard to complete existing projects.

After that, the 87-year-old Blount told the newspaper, he may come out of retirement to assume control of the shipyard, as long as his health permits.

Blount retired in 2000, at age 84, and leased the yard's real estate and equipment to Ohio shipbuilder James A. Barker, who assumed management of the shipyard's employees and its contracts with customers.

Besides serving as a landlord, Blount said that he and his family had no ownership interest or control of the shipbuilding operations known as Blount-Barker Shipbuilding LLC.

Blount's other companies include the Bay Queen dinner and excursion cruise line and the American Canadian Caribbean Cruise Line.
