NYK goes to Chantiers for newbuilding for Crystal
Crystal Cruises' parent company, NYK, has signed a letter of intent with French shipyard Chantiers de l'Atlantique for the construction of a new luxury ship. The 68,000-ton, 1,080-guest ship is expected to join Crystal's fleet in the fall of 2003.
"The order for this new state-of-the-art cruise ship further demonstrates our commitment to Crystal Cruises and reinforces NYK's continuing support of the line's award-winning product,'' said NYK (Nippon Yusen Kaisha) presidentTakao Kusakari.
With 1,880 berths, Crystal claims to be the largest luxury cruise operator in the industry. The new vessel will increase its capacity by almost 60%.
The new ship will feature an even greater space-per-guest ratio than sister ships, Crystal Harmony and Crystal Symphony, considered two of the most spacious ships afloat. Plans include expanded areas for spa services and other athletic, cultural and intellectual pursuits. Within a range of luxury accommodations, the line will increase its number of penthouses and enlarge its deluxe staterooms with verandahs. Approximately 85% of its all outside staterooms and suites will offer private verandahs.

SembCorp Engineering clinches contracts
worth $115 million
Singapore's Sembawang Marine & Offshore Engineering, the oil and gas division of SembCorp Engineering (SembENG), yesterday said it had been awarded three contracts with a total value of approximately Singapore $200million (about US$115 million).
The three contracts include an offshoreplatform turnkey contract for Elf Petroleum Iran, a Floating, Production,Storage & Offloading (FPSO) topside facilities contract for Halliburton West Africa as well as a wellhead platform contract for Phillips Petroleum (91-12) of Australia.
SembENG, will be in consortium partnership with Iranian Offshore Engineering and Construction (IOEC) to execute the contract for Elf Petroleum Iran for the Balal FieldDevelopment project. SembENG will be responsible for theengineering, procurement, construction, offshore hook-up and commissioning ofthe topside decks of a combined process and living quarters platform (PLQP) and a wellhead platform (WHP). IOEC will perform the engineering,procurement,construction, transportation and installation of the jackets, piles, flare,tripod and bridge, as well as transportation and installation of the topside decks.
Scheduled for completion in the thirdquarter of 2002, the eight-legged PLQP will have a total weight of more than 6,000 metric tonnes, while the four-legged WHP will weigh more than 1,900 metric tonnes. The flare, tripod and bridge will weigh about 300 metric tonnes in total.
The Halliburton FPSO contract is a joint venture with Sembawang Shipyard. It involves fabrication andinstallation of topside facilities onto an FPSO vessel for theShell EA development project operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company in Nigeria.
SembENGs scope of work will include fabrication and integration of nine modules (cooler, compression, separation,utilities/metering, power generation, knock out drum and three pipe racks) ana flare tower onto the hull of the FPSO. The contract will also entail on-shore precommissioning and commissioning assistance to the client.
Scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2002, the topside facilities will have a total weight of over 8,000 metric tonnes.
SembENG's contract withPhillips Petroleum (91-12) of Australia is for the construction, onshore precommissioning, loadout and commissioning assistance of a wellhead platformfor the Bayu-Undan Gas Recycle Project in the Zone of Co-operation between EastTimor and Australia.
Scheduled for completion in the firstquarter of 2002, the platform
will have a total weight of more than 2,800 metric tonnes.
Ievoli Sun sinking increases pressures for unilateral EU maritime action
The sinking in the English Channel of the Ievoli Sun is increasing pressures for tough, unilateral, action on shipping safety by the European Union.
Earlier this week, the General Secretary of the European Transport Workers' Federation (ETF), Doro Zinke, heavily criticized EU "procrastination" over the introduction of tougher shipping safety measures.k.
"How many more disasters will it take before real measures are implemented to stop them?", asked Ms Zinke. "The current Erika I and Erika II proposals fall short on several counts: firstly, they are simply too late and we are angry and frustrated at the length of time it has taken the Commission and the Council to push these through. Secondly, they are insufficient, because even if they had been in place they would not have stopped the sinking of the Ievoli Sun".
Current proposals exist to ban all ships over 15 years old which have been detained twice in the previous two years and to examine the gradual phasing-out of single- hulled vessels and the gradual introduction of double-hulled vessels, notes the ETF. The Ievoli Sun possessed a double hull and was only 11 years old. It had been detained three times recently in the Netherlands.
"The facts of this sinking make a mockery of the proposals on the table," said Zinke, "If a vessel is not well-maintained, despite having a double hull, and if the crew is not trained to the highest standards, then the age limit on the vessel is utterly meaningless.\
Eduardo Chagas, ETF official responsible for Maritime Transport, said that the whole issue of classification societies and liability would have to be tackled in a coherent way by the EU. "All ships should be inspected regularly - not just a proportion thereof - and a shipping and classification society blacklist should be introduced which would effectively outlaw these practices in our waters".
